Lawsuits claim hate crimes by Chicago police

Attorneys have filed at least two lawsuits claiming racially tinged misconduct by Chicago police officers against people celebrating President-elect Barack Obama’s victory on Election Night. On Thursday, attorney Gregory Kulis (KOO’-lis) sued in federal court claiming a Black family was cheering outside their West Side home when white officers allegedly discharged pepper spray. He contends the officers then entered the home and shouted profanity-laced insults. Kulis filed another lawsuit Friday alleging white officers in an unmarked car shouted racist insults and pepper-sprayed a Black family’s children. The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating both allegations, and authorities say it’s received "multiple" complaints of Election Night misconduct. A police spokeswoman hasn’t returned messages seeking comment.  AP ______ Copyright 2008 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
