The mother of one of three teenagers who drowned during a school leadership retreat last week has filed a lawsuit against the Chicago Public Schools and the camp where the retreat took place.
The lawsuit filed Wednesday in Cook County Circuit Court by Virginia Choice, mother of 17-year-old Melvin Choice, accuses Visionquest Association, which organized the leadership retreat at Camp Algonquin, the YMCA of McHenry County and North Lawndale College Prep of negligence. The lawsuit seeks more than $800,000 in damages.
The three students, 18-year-old Jimmy Avant, 16-year-old Adrian Jones and Choice, left a camp dorm and launched paddle boats into the Fox River, not knowing the boats’ floor plugs had been removed for the winter.
Two of the teens died after the paddleboat capsized, and the third drowned during a rescue attempt. AP
