The state of Illinois has filed a lawsuit alleging a Chicago-based immigration services provider bilked customers out of nearly $140,000. The Illinois attorney general’s office says its lawsuit names Juanita Mendez, who it says also used the last names Cruz and Sanchez. It also names her associate, Melesio Reyes. The lawsuit accuses the two of charging consumers for immigration services they never performed. It says they employed deceptive tactics to convince people the government was considering their requests for permanent residency or U.S. citizenship. That allegedly included sometimes indicating that Mendez was a U.S. immigration or sheriff’s employee. The attorney general’s office didn’t immediately know if Mendez or Reyes had attorneys. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
