A judge has ordered a 15-year-old Chicago boy on $900,000 bond in the shooting 7-year-old Tyvion Jackson in the city’s Garfield Park neighborhood this weekend.
Lavante Jackason — no relation to the victim — was charged as an adult with aggravated discharge of a firearm, according to DNAinfo Chicago.
The Sun-Times reports police had an existing warrant out for the alleged shooter’s arrest in relation to a drug charge. After breaking his 2 p.m. curfew, the GPS tracker on Lavante Jackson’s ankle bracelet helped authorities pinpoint the teen “seconds” before he allegedly fired the bullets that hit the small boy.
Jackson was shot walking up the steps of his home in the 4200 block of West 5th Avenue to put his bike away around 9 p.m. Sunday.
Tyvion’s mother, Tasha McDuffie, told the Tribune, “He’s just traumatized, and he’s afraid to come outside.” McDuffie told the Sun-Times the little boy “doesn’t really understand why he got shot.”
Police had few details on the shooting Tuesday morning. The Sun-Times says two groups of young men — some standing on the corner and others in a parked car — began arguing and shots were fired when the conflict grew heated.
Jackson is the tenth child age 7 or younger to be shot in Chicago in less than two months, according to a Tribune analysis.
