Monday night, the Illinois Department of Transportation begins its latest resurfacing project on Lake Shore Drive that will result in nightly closures for roughly the next five weeks.

IDOT will close the stretch of drive from North to Balbo Avenues from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning starting Sept. 30. In a statement, IDOT said drivers should expect delays during the nightly lane closures and should also be on the lookout for altered speed limit signs and workers.

Luckily, weekend drivers will be spared the slow-downs. The Tribune says resurfacing work will only take place on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights.

In addition to daily motorists, Lake Shore Drive has seen an unusual amount of wear-and-tear this month.

In early September, concrete fell from an overpass onto the road at North Avenue and Lake Shore Drive, where the resurfacing work is taking place.

Just last week, a small plane made a landing on the runway along the drive just east of the Loop.
