Kwanzaa, a week-long celebration of African-American culture, heritage, and unity, takes place annually from December 26 to January 1. Created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, it draws inspiration from African harvest festivals and focuses on seven core principles known as Nguzo Saba, which emphasize values such as unity, self-determination, and collective responsibility. Rooted in tradition, Kwanzaa serves as a time for reflection, celebration, and community building.
This year, Chicago will host a variety of events honoring the spirit of Kwanzaa. From cultural performances and artisan markets to family-friendly activities, here’s your guide to the festivities happening throughout the city.
