Keys, Belafonte And Bassett Honor Ruby Dee At Star-Packed MemorialEntertainment icon Ruby Dee was honored with an all-star memorial Saturday during in New York City.
The public home-going service, held at the Riverside Church in Upper Manhattan, attracted fans and celebrities , who celebrated the late actress/activist through songs and poems, according to CBS. Among those paying their respects were Alicia Keys, Harry Belafonte and Angela Bassett.
Performances included Keys, who sang “Superwoman;” Peter Yarrow and Wynton Marsalis, who honored Dee with a trumpet piece. Bassett, Phylicia Rashad, Tyne Daly, Kim Fields, S. Epatha Merkerson, Pauletta Washington and Lynn Whitfield read words and poems.
Dee’s home-going service comes months after the entertainer died at her home in New Rochelle, NY on June 11. She was 91.
Belafonte delivered the eulogy during the service, saying, “Ruby was always there to speak to justice, to speak to fair play.”
In addition,  CBS noted that family tributes to Dee were delivered by her children, Nora Davis Day, Guy Davis, Dr. Hasna Muhammad and Wali Muhammad, as well as her grandchildren.
