Former Vice President Kamala Harris was a surprise attendee of the 2025 Met Gala, marking a rare high-profile appearance for the Democrat since losing the presidential election in November.

On Monday (May 5), Harris made her first-ever appearance at the Met Gala in New York alongside her husband, Doug Emhoff, per CNN.

The couple quietly attended the event, skipping the red carpet. Photos taken before the event show Harris wearing a custom-black-and-white gown by Off-White. The former VP’s ensemble for this year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” featured an asymmetrical cape sleeve and a long scarf.

A Harris spokesperson said she was invited by Vogue editor-in-chief and Met Gala co-chair Anna Wintour.

The former vice president isn’t the first politician to take the Met steps for fashion’s biggest night. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton attended the Met Gala in 2022 wearing a red gown embroidered with the names of trailblazing women, including Harriet Tubman and Eleanor Roosevelt. In 2021, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made a statement on the carpet with a white gown featuring the message “Tax the Rich” in red.

Harris attended this year’s Met Gala, which celebrated the history of Black dandyism, based on Monica L. Miller’s book “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.”

“To me the true core of dandyism is rooted in confidence and strength. There is no person who exemplifies these characteristics more than Kamala D. Harris, someone who has overcome adversity and continues to be a beacon for so many,” Off-White creative director IB Kamara said in a statement.
