Joliet Man, Suspected of Killing Eight People, Fatally Shoots Self in Texas

A Joliet man suspected of shooting and killing eight people in the Chicago suburbs fatally shot himself after a confrontation with Texas law enforcement.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. central time, US Marshals successfully located 23-year-old Romeo Nance near Natalia, Texas, approximately 36 miles southwest of San Antonio. A confrontation occurred where Nance reportedly took his own life, according to law enforcement officials.

This grim outcome had its roots in events that occurred on Sunday and early Monday, when Nance allegedly carried out a shooting spree, murdering eight individuals at three separate locations in Will County and Joliet.

One victim was discovered on Sunday in a Will County home, while seven others were found on Monday in two residences on the same Joliet block, approximately 6 miles northwest of the initial crime scene. The names, ages and genders of the Joliet victims have not been released as of this writing.

Nance lived in one of those two Joliet homes, and Will County and Joliet city police said that he knew his victims. They also said they did not know of any motives for the killings.

“I’ve been a policeman for 29 years, and this is probably the worst crime scene I’ve ever been associated with,” said Joliet Police Chief William Evans.

Moreover, police believe that Nance is connected to another shooting of a Joliet man, a ninth victim, after a verbal altercation. That victim, who was shot in the leg, survived the shooting, reported ABC 7 Chicago.

Before Nance’s apparent apprehension and death in Texas, law enforcement officials told assembled media members in the Joliet area that he should be considered “armed and dangerous.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
