To borrow from her latest charttopping album, “If its hip hop if its bebop reggaeton of the metronome%uFFFD whatever it is,” expect Jill Scott to bring it this weekend as she takes the stage at the Chicago Theater.
When the lights go down at the downtown venue, fans expect for the spirited, soulful, and bold music of love, sensuality, freedom and respect that has become Jill Scott’s artistic imprint to permeate and entertain.
Scott has promised not to disappoint. In an interview with the Chicago Defender, Scott said her concert will be “something you can just have fun at and not worry about who’s sitting next to you.” Scott’s The Real Thing tour caps a whirl-wind year that saw the neosoul singers release her fourth fulllength album, make her big screen debut in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married, and accept another Grammy Award%uFFFDthis time for a collaboration she did with Chicago rap artist Lupe Fiasco.
Despite a divorce from Lyzel Williams, her longtime love and the lyrical inspiration for her He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat) from her album, Experience: Jill Scott 826 , Scott told the Defender that she has not soured on love and has not backed down from the intimacy she so poetically puts to grooving music.
“I still believe in love and marriage. The only thing I would say is that people shouldn’t mix business and pleasure,” Scott said. Her music, she explained, is an artistic expression of her life experiences. “My passion, pain, hate, love%uFFFDall come through my personal experiences and I try to get that through my music and performances,” the Philadelphia native said.
Scott said concert goers should prepare to experience “intense raw energy.” Though her accomplishments include a number of ‘bests’ and she enjoys international acclaim and appeal, Scott said she keeps things in perspective. “I want people to know that I’m still Jilly from Philly, I still love family, friends, love, sex,” she told the Defender.
Scott’s music spans genres and her live performances offer a spin on her classic hits that are sure to please. Look for the bubbly recording artist to also bring to the stage her signature blinging smile. Scott is not resting on her artistic laurels.
The recording artist is stepping from behind the mic to pursue an array of things. Look for her in the upcoming HBO/Weinstein production No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. She will be in Africa this summer filming the movie, where she is cast in the lead role as Precious Ramotswe, a Motswana woman who runs a detective agency in the Botswana capital city.
Music by Jill Scott is featured on the soundtrack for Tyler Perry’s upcoming movie release, Meet the Browns. Complementing her intimate songs is her new line of intimate wear.
Her Butterfly Collection bra line will hit Ashley Stewart stores – plus-size women’s clothes retailer – in May, Scott said. R&B singer Raheem DeVaughn is also part of the tour and will be at the Chicago Theater with Scott. Chicago’s spoken word artist, Malik Yusef, will also perform.
