Jewel-Osco has joined forces with the Chicago Public Schools and the annual Bud Billiken Day Parade to help remind parents about the importance of being ready for the first day of school. The grocer is giving away 1,400 backpacks through its “Backpack Giveback” promotion.

“Coming prepared to learn is a large part of being successful in school,” said Arne Duncan, chief executive officer for Chicago Public Schools. “This CPS and Jewel-Osco combined effort will help prepare students for the success they deserve.”

During the entire month of August, participating Chicago Jewel-Osco stores will support the back-toschool campaign by giving away backpacks filled with a variety of school supplies, valuable store coupons and important information for parents.

“We’re very proud to partner with the Chicago Public Schools on this important effort,” said Keith Nielsen, president of Jewel-Osco. “Through this special promotion, we will help remind parents to have their kids ready for the first day of school. The Bud Billiken Parade has been an important part of that message for nearly eight decades.”

WPWX-FM’s (Power 92) Hot Boyz (Tone and Shag) will do live remotes from select Jewel-Osco stores every Friday. Jewel-Osco store locations participating in the “backpack giveback” include:

Aug. 15–7530 S. Stony Island, 5 p.m.-9 p.m. Aug. 22–1655 E. 95th St., 5 p.m.-9 p.m. Aug. 29–87 W. 87th St., 5 p.m.-9 p.m.

Jewel-Osco, which operates 183 stores in Illinois, Iowa and Indiana, has been a regular participant in the annual Bud Billiken Parade for nearly two decades. The company and its local African American product vendors marched in Saturday’s parade.
