Jackson Co. Health Dept. cuts hours to save money

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. — The Jackson County Health Department will be closed on Friday because of uncertainty with the state budget. Director Miriam Link-Mullison says department officials made the decision to close on Friday to prevent laying off staff during the month of July. She says they may have to take similar action again, depending on how funding for local health departments is handled by the state. In the mean time, Link-Mullison says they’re still responsible for carrying out mandated services even though the state funding situation is uncertain. About 60 percent of the Jackson County Public Health Department’s programs are subsidized by state and federal dollars.
