Dear Dr. Karen:
My boyfriend and I have been talking about marriage, but there is one issue I cannot get past. He is selfish and cheap! He contributes very little to the household chores and financial obligations such as buying food and taking care of the household bills. He rarely takes me out to dinner and for my last birthday he got me a cheap pen and pencil set. But, he spends large amounts of money on weekends and vacations with the boys. How can I turn this relationship around?
~ Fed Up
Dear Fed Up:
Stop your whining and complaining. This man has clearly told you and shown you who he is. Why are you expecting him to show up and shower you with gifts from Tiffany’s? His priorities as you stated are to his boys. You don’t seem to be anywhere in this picture? You have also been fulfilling your half of the financial obligations where is his?
You seem to be in a relationship with a man who is clearly not giving you what you want. If this is the man you claim to love and want to spend the rest of your life with this man then either put up or put him out. Or, look forward to the next 50 years of pen and pencil sets.
***If a person tells you and shows you who they are should you try to change them?
