EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — An investigator says a southwestern Illinois pastor hadn’t received any threats before being gunned down during a Sunday service in March. Deputy Coroner Todd Ballard offered that testimony to a Madison County coroner’s jury that moments later Wednesday ruled the Rev. Fred Winters’ death a homicide. Prosecutors already have accused 27-year-old Terry Sedlacek (SEHD’-lak) of Troy of killing Winters mid-sermon on March 8 at the First Baptist Church in Maryville. Ballard’s testimony that Winters’ widow told investigators her husband hadn’t received any threats leading up to the shooting left the reasons behind the killing still a mystery. Authorities haven’t suggested a motive. Sedlacek wasn’t a member of the church. He’s pleaded not guilty and is scheduled for trial next month. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
