Inmates, guards injured in Cook County jail fight

A Tuesday morning fight at Cook County Jail left seven inmates and 11 prison guards injured.

The fight brought out among more than 200 inmates during recreation time in a maximum security jail yard, sheriff’s spokeswoman Penny Mateck said. Forty inmates from rival gangs began throwing punches, and several guards rushed to break up the fracas, which lasted a couple minutes. Eight guards and five inmates were treated for minor cuts and bruises, and three guards and two inmates were taken to local hospitals, Mateck said. She described all injuries as “non life threatening,” but declined to say whether those admitted to hospitals would be released by day’s end. Jail officials are investigating the incident. A search of the inmates and the jail yard yielded no weapons, Mateck said. ______ Copyright 2008 Chicago Defender. All rights reserved.
