Inmate mistakenly freed from jail back in custody

A former Chicago-area man who was mistakenly released from Cook County Jail is back in custody and awaiting transport to Mississippi to finish a prison term. Cook County sheriff’s office spokesman Steve Patterson says 28-year-old Jonathan Cooper turned himself in to a family member’s home early Thursday without incident. Patterson says Cooper is back at Cook County Jail. Cooper was serving a 30-year manslaughter sentence in Mississippi when he was brought to Chicago to face charges that he failed to register as a sex offender. Prosecutors dropped the charges because, as an inmate, he can’t comply with the sex offender registration act. A clerk reportedly failed to include the Mississippi sentence information in Cooper’s file, and jail staff mistakenly released him. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
