INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard said Sunday he’s outraged at shootings that wounded 10 young people during the Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration.
Ballard and other leaders held a news conference to talk about the three incidents, none of which happened at venues hosting Black Expo events.
No arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon, although police said they had a suspect in mind in at least one of the shootings. The victims were as young as 10 years old.
None of the injuries were life-threatening, police spokesman Lt. Jeff Duhamell said.
Black Expo President Tanya Bell released a statement saying that fortunately none of the shootings were fatal.
"As our community celebrates 40 years of having one of the largest African-American events in the country, we are saddened by the reported incidents," Bell said.
The gunfire began when several shots rang out around 9:30 p.m. Saturday near Circle Center mall, leaving eight people wounded and sending people running, Duhamell said.
He said a second shooting occurred nearby just minutes after the initial shots and left one more person wounded. The third shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m., wounding one last victim, Duhamell said.
"It’s pretty unusual to have this many shots in one time. It’s very unfortunate," he said.
Investigators were trying to determine if any of the shootings were gang-related, Duhamell said.
He said hundreds of officers had been assigned to police the 10-day event, which was to conclude later Sunday.
