Independent autopsy sought in Evanston schoolboy’s death

The mother of Aquan Lewis, the 10-year-old boy whose death was determined a suicide, wants an independent autopsy, hoping it will dispute the Cook County medical examiner’s ruling. Angel Marshall refuses to accept that her fifth-grade son took his own life earlier this week while inside a bathroom at his north suburban school. Aquan was found Tuesday afternoon in the boys’ bathroom at Oakton Elementary School in Evanston hanging on a hook by his shirt collar. The boy reportedly told a teacher he was going to kill himself after he was scolded at the school earlier that day. Marshall said the first time she learned about the alleged remarks and other information about her son’s death was through the media instead of from school officials or the police department. Evanston police and the Evanston-Skokie School District 65 declined to comment further about the “ongoing” investigation. Todd Smith, the family’s attorney, said if the boy did make the statement, action should’ve been taken by the school and Aquan’s mother should’ve been notified. The Illinois Dept. of Children and Family Services launched an investigation about the allegations of neglect against the school district. The family is also seeking donations to help with funeral arrangements for Aquan. Donations can be made at any TCF Bank branch under the “Aquan Lewis Burial Fund.” ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender. All rights reserved.
