SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois is to receive about $1.8 million in federal money to increase Internet access. U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said Wednesday that the money will come from the U.S. Department of Commerce. It will be used to expand access to broadband Internet through better data collection and planning. Durbin’s office says the non-governmental organization Partnership for a Connected Illinois will use about $1.3 million of the grant money for broadband collection and mapping. The state-supervised group will use about $500,000 for broadband planning. Durbin says "broadband is an important economic tool, and too many Illinoisans lack adequate and affordable access."
