SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Health officials say swine flu has spread into southern Illinois with a single confirmed case in Franklin County. The Illinois Department of Public Health reported the case Friday among 393 confirmed cases statewide. The vast majority are in Chicago and its suburbs. Officials say the Franklin County patient has recovered without spreading the virus to others. Whitney Mehaffy is a spokeswoman for the Franklin-Williamson Bi-County Health Department in Marion. She says by now anyone who had contact with the individual would have experienced symptoms. Only one Illinois case is called "probable," meaning it hasn’t yet been confirmed by additional testing. The new tally of confirmed cases is 135 more than Thursday’s total. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
