The Illinois Black Hall of Fame (IBHOF) will be an evening of elegance, networking, and, ultimately, a celebration where distinguished trailblazers who have made a seismic impact will deservedly receive their flowers.

This prestigious event, coinciding with the Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom, takes place at Governors State University on Saturday, June 15.

Richard Boykin, one of the event’s organizers, emphasized the significance of the IBHOF and its role in recognizing the contributions of outstanding individuals. “I think people should come out and support because this is all about us,” Boykin said. It’s about honoring people who’ve made significant achievements throughout their lives—people who blazed the trail for us to follow.”

The 2024 inductees into the IBHOF include distinguished figures such as U.S. Reps. Robin Kelly, Danny K. Davis, Brigadier General Tomika M. Seaberry, and Judge Vincent F. Cornelius. Additionally, the event will honor the Black Women of First Distinction Class of 2024, featuring Mayor Sheila Chalmers Currin, the first Black woman mayor of Matteson, Illinois, and Dr. Georgiana Simpson, the first Black woman to receive a PhD in German from the University of Chicago in 1921. Simpson will be posthumously honored.

Boykin highlighted the importance of reflecting on these achievements and their impact on the community. “We’re standing on the shoulders of giants in Illinois,” he said. And those giants are reflected in the Illinois Black Hall of Fame.”

Standing on The Shoulders Of Past Black Hall of Fame Honorees

The Black Hall of Fame boasts an impressive list of past honorees who have left an indelible mark on their Illinois communities and beyond. Notable inductees include Dr. Timuel D. Black, revered civil rights activist and educator, and Spencer Leak Sr., a prominent businessman and community leader. The esteemed list also features Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr. and Bessie Coleman, who were celebrated posthumously as the first Black woman to earn a pilot’s license.

Other distinguished past inductees are Dr. Dorothy Leavell, a trailblazing newspaper publisher, and Derrick Taylor, a respected educator and community advocate. The Hall of Fame also honored John W. Rogers Jr., a pioneering investment manager, and Dr. Blondean Davis, a dedicated educational leader. Dr. Willie Wilson, known for his philanthropic efforts

The event promises to be a night of inspiration and celebration. Boykin expressed his excitement for the future of the IBHOF, envisioning it as an event that will continue to grow in significance and impact.

“I think it only gets better,” he stated. “It becomes one of those events that you can’t miss. It’s going to provide some hope for the future and give inspiration from the work that these folks are doing.”

Recognizing Our Future Leaders

The IBHOF is not just about celebrating past achievements but also about inspiring future generations.

During this event, scholarships will be awarded to young people pursuing higher education, ensuring the legacy of excellence continues. Boykin encouraged the community to get involved and support this noble cause. “We want the media to come and just check it out and see what’s happening and report back to the people,” he said. “We’re excited about it, and we’re going to have a good time honoring the black achievers for doing great things in Illinois.”

The dedication of visionary leaders like Dr. Ceola Barnes, who has invested significant time and energy into this initiative, was also acknowledged.

“We thank God for her leadership and for all the people in Illinois who are doing great things,” Boykin said. He urged the community to participate in the event and consider making nominations for future inductees.

The 2024 Illinois Black Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is poised to be a landmark event, celebrating the past, present, and future of Black excellence in Illinois. For more information on how to attend or donate to the Honorees’ Scholarship Fund, visit www.ibhof.org.
