CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago-area woman is going to prison for conning an elderly man out of $95,000 by pretending to have cancer.
Cook County prosecutors say 28-year-old Pebbles Miller of Justice tricked the 80-year-old man into giving her the money over five months. He believed he was helping to pay for her cancer treatment.
Miller was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison by Cook County Judge James Obbish.
Prosecutors say the victim gave Miller cashier’s checks or money transfers of $400 to $45,000 between September 2012 and January 2013.
She was caught after the victim ran out of money and contacted Catholic Charities to see if that organization could help the woman with her treatment.
Catholic Charities contacted Chicago police.
