SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias (jeh-NOO’-lee-ehs) is considering a run for the US Senate. The Chicago Democrat has formed an official exploratory committee. That lets him raise money for a possible run next year. In his announcement Monday, Giannoulias noted that President Barack Obama has been his political mentor. He says Illinois needs a senator who can help deliver the change that Obama has promised. The Senate seat is now held by Roland Burris, who was appointed by former Gov. Rod Blagojevich after Obama won the White House. Burris is facing widespread calls for his resignation. The primary election is less than a year away. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
