Ill. town’s crumbling museum poses casket issue

HARRISBURG, Ill. — City leaders in the southern Illinois town of Harrisburg have a casket conundrum on their hands. It appears that the mausoleum at the city’s cemetery is crumbling, meaning the remains of 82 people inside it need to be moved. Eighty-two caskets have been donated for that transfer and have been stored by Southeastern Illinois College. But the college’s foundation says someone now needs the space where the caskets are being stored, and city leaders are scrambling to figure out where to put them. Slowing the transfer of the bodies is the fact that many of those whose remains are to be moved died in the early 1900s, so finding relatives has been a chore. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press, WSIL-TV.
