Ill. to deny aid to 130,000 college students

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission says the state will deny about 130,000 financial aid applications to college students for the upcoming academic year.

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission says the state will deny about 130,000 financial aid applications to college students for the upcoming academic year. The commission says all its projected financial aid funds for the 2009-2010 school year were committed by May 15. That’s the earliest such date in the state’s history. Applications received after that date had to be denied. The commission says that from January through June, the state received more applications than ever before. More than 200,000 eligible students requested assistance, up 27 percent from the previous year. Commission spokesman Paul Palien says budget cuts also mean the state’s largest financial aid program — the Monetary Award Program — won’t have money to fund students in the second half of the 2009-2010 academic year. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
