HINSDALE, Ill. — Hours after robbing a Dunkin’ Donuts of $167, officials say a suburban Chicago teenager with a guilty conscience went back to the store to return the money, apologize and ask the clerk for a hug. The change of heart, caught by a surveillance camera, didn’t prevent authorities from later arresting Alex Holmes, 17, of Hinsdale and charging him as an adult with aggravated robbery. "I’ve been in law enforcement for 14 years, and I’ve never seen this happen," Hinsdale Police detective Charles Leuver said Thursday. Holmes allegedly held up the female clerk around 3 a.m. Tuesday with a BB gun, said Assistant DuPage County State’s Attorney Brooks Locke. About 24 hours later he returned, confessed, apologized and put the money on the counter, including loose change he’d gotten from the cash register, authorities said. When he realized the clerk did not speak English, he wrote a note that said he was sorry and shouldn’t have taken the money. "He said he felt bad about it," Leuver said. Holmes tried to hug the clerk but she backed away, Leuver said. A store surveillance camera taped both the robbery and apology. On Wednesday, Hinsdale police saw Holmes on a bicycle and arrested him. The BB gun was at his parents’ house, Locke said. Holmes was charged with felony aggravated robbery. He remained jailed Thursday on $75,000 bond.
