The Illinois Senate approved a significant change in how the Republican Party chooses its leaders. But not all Republicans are on board. The change would require public elections to pick members of the Republican Party’s state central committee. Right now, committee members are chosen by party insiders at the precinct level. They say government shouldn’t get involved with party matters and believe Democrats — who supported the measure — are meddling with GOP business. The measure now awaits a vote in the House. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
