The National Weather Service says as much as 3.5 inches of rain accumulated in parts of southern Illinois overnight. In Gillespie, northeast of St. Louis, school was canceled Thursday because much of the town was without power, and some school buildings were damaged. St. Louis-based utility Ameren says nearly 10,000 southern Illinois customers remain without power. ComEd reports thousands of customers without electricity in and around Chicago.
