SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Illinois lawmakers are back in Springfield this week to make another go at passing a new budget. The House will reconvene Monday and meet through Wednesday. The Senate will convene Wednesday and may meet through Friday. Legislative leaders aren’t saying what budget action they’ll pursue. Democrats are hoping to approve a spending plan by May 31. After then, new requirements kick in and Republican votes would be required to pass any budget measure. The current budget expires on June 30. The Legislature adjourned earlier this month without passing a budget. Lawmakers are stuck on what to do about a $13 billion budget deficit. Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn has been meeting with legislators to build support for his proposals to borrow billions of dollars. Copyright 2010 The Associated Press.
