SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan says he avoids meeting with his Republican counterpart, Tom Cross, because Cross is unhelpful. The Chicago Democrat told a business group Wednesday he avoids meetings with Cross — the GOP leader — if they’re not going to be "fruitful." He says Cross is not helpful when difficult decisions must be made. He did not elaborate and would not answer questions afterward. Meanwhile, Cross delivered a speech on the House floor in which he accused Madigan of abusing his power. He says Madigan alone decides what legislation comes up for a vote. Cross says personalities should not play a role in legislative work and insists he gets along well with other top Democrats. Democrats outnumber Republicans in the House 70-48. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
