Attacking the hunger problem in America head on this weekend will be a host of volunteers from churches, government agencies, community, business and civic groups that will offer 70,000 pounds of free groceries to families in the North Lawndale community on the West Side. Also, more than 1,000 motorcyclists will be volunteering their time. The Rev. Ray Allen Berryhill, pastor of Evangel World Outreach Center, 5100 W. Diversey, is organizing the event. “So many have begun to respond to our message of hunger relief in North Lawndale, including everyone from law enforcement to members of street gangs. Everyone wants to help,” said the Rev. Berryhill. “Our efforts cut across class, race and social stigma—people want to be a part of something good and productive in this town.
Imagine the looks on people’s faces when they see hundreds of bikers and police escorting the groceries into the community. Ours is a team effort—and the team is Chicago.” Berryhill said the convoy will gather Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on a 23-acre lot at Kostner Ave. and Roosevelt Road. And a prayer rally will be 7 p.m. Friday at United Baptist Church, 4244 W. Roosevelt Road. The “Convoy of Hope” consists of two 18-wheeler semi tractor-trailers each bearing enough food supplies to feed more than 10,000 families.
