Federal officials are asking Chicagoans for help in designing a first-ever national survey of housing discrimination against the gay community. The U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department will hold a listening session Thursday at City Hall. Sessions will also be held soon in New York City and San Francisco. HUD wants to study how common housing bias is against people who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. Before designing the study, officials want to hear from people in the community about their experiences with discrimination. Bias complaints and lawsuits nationwide make clear that members of the gay community face housing discrimination, but no one has tried to track how common such bias is.
