How Do You Feel About Valentine's Day? Is It A Day Of Love Or Heartbreak? Ask Dr. Karen

When You Need Some Advice Don’t Ask Twice… Ask Dr. Karen!
“LOVE IS IN THE AIR.” Follow my column each day through Sunday and find out how our Chicago Defender reader’s really feel about the “LOVE DAY.”

Dear Dr. Karen:
I have been married for 15 years. I feel like I’m no longer obligated to participate in Valentine’s Day. To me, it is another Capitalist scam for men to spend their hard earned money. It is so commercial and everything is over priced. Love should be in your heart and not in your wallet.
My wife thinks differently. She says that if “I loved her” I would show my appreciation. It’s just one day. What’s the big deal?

Dear Anti-Valentine:
After 15 years of marriage, you feel obligated to appreciate your wife? Your marriage sounds about as romantic and exciting as a pot of water waiting to boil…BORING.
You have gotten past Valentine’s Day but your wife hasn’t. Why are you blaming her for wanting you to care about her? The fact that she even has to say, “If you loved me,” is pathetic. She shouldn’t have to beg for your attention.
When is the last time you did something special and surprised her? In the words of Janet Jackson, what have you done for her lately? Love is putting a smile on someone’s face no matter how small or large the price tag.
This is not just any woman. This is your wife. Think about her feelings and stop being selfish. If you don’t, all you will have is your hard earned money and a loveless marriage.
