Hoops in Hood title games set

The Hoops in the Hood basketball championship games will be taking place Saturday at Seward Park, located at Division and Orleans.

The Hoops in the Hood basketball championship games will be taking place Saturday at Seward Park, located at Division and Orleans. Teams from the communities of Englewood, Little Village, Pilsen, West Haven, Logan Square. Humboldt Park and North Village will be competing for the title. An overflow crowd, including Bulls mascot Benny the Bull, is expected to be onhand to watch the finals. In its second year, the Hoops in the Hood program is a city basketball league that aims to provide safe and healthy activities for young people in the city. At the championship, titles will be on the line in the pee wee, minor and major divisions. Also to be recognized during ceremonies will be many volunteers and community members who dedicated countless hours to make each league a success. Community leaders and volunteers from Beyond the Ball, the YMCA Street Intervention Program, Near West Side Community Development Corporation, Sankofa Youth Development Institute, Little Village Community Development Corporation, Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation, The Resurrection Project, Teamwork Englewood and Lawndale Christian Development Corporation and Logan Square Neighborhood Association all gave their time and effort to give kids in their neighborhood a positive, active summer. ______ Copyright 2008 Chicago Defender.
