Hearing set on Madigan request to shift Burge case

A judge in Chicago plans to hear Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s request to be relieved of police torture cases. The hearing will focus on the request from Madigan’s office, which has argued that it wants to shift the cases involving Chicago police Cmdr. Jon Burge to Cook County prosecutors because of budget cuts. The Illinois attorney general was given the cases after a judge ruled that then-Cook County State’s Attorney Dick Devine and his assistants had a conflict of interest because his law firm had represented Burge. Current Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez’s office has said it would take the cases if directed to do so. Burge has pleaded not guilty to lying under oath about the torture of African-American suspects. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
