Hearing set for George Ryan’s motion

CHICAGO (AP) — A hearing is set in the corruption case of a former Illinois governor whose name is not Rod Blagojevich. Thursday’s hearing in U.S. District Court in Chicago involving former Gov. George Ryan is only expected to schedule arguments on a motion filed by Ryan’s attorneys. The motion seeks to have parts of his 2006 conviction dismissed. The 76-year-old Ryan is serving a more than six-year sentence. Ryan is due for release in 2013, but his lawyers want Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer to throw out convictions that were based on a disputed anti-fraud laws. That could eventually lead to the Republican’s early release. Ryan’s been out of the headlines for years. His successor, Rod Blagojevich, was convicted on one of 24 charges last month. The Democrat will be retried on the deadlocked counts. Copyright 2010 The Associated Press.
