CHICAGO (AP) — Health officials say there are simple tips to stay healthy this flu season.

Dr. Catherine Cheng at Northwestern Memorial Hospital recommends flu vaccines. She says one of the misconceptions is that it makes people sick. She says it may cause temporary side effects but it won’t put people at risk of getting the flu.

Health experts say everyone over the age of six months should receive one. It’s especially important for children under five and adults 65 or older, among others. Some people who have had allergic reaction to the vaccine in the past or suffer from egg allergies should look for alternate methods of protection.

Other tips include covering your mouth and nose when you cough and getting plenty of rest.

The flu season runs from October through May.
