Health departments meeting about boosting quality

State and local health departments from around the nation are meeting in Chicago this week to share strategies for improving public health services.

Tackling public health emergencies including swine flu is among topics at the three-day meeting. It’s taking place at the Westin Hotel and ends Friday.

Illinois is one of 16 states participating in a quality improvement effort managed by the National Network of Public Health Institutes. These states are working to achieve specific goals such as boosting vaccination rates and getting more people to exercise.

They’re also involved in efforts to create standards and a voluntary accreditation program, and will share their progress with other states at the meeting.
