The Chicago Defender is a media sponsor of Harold Washington: On-The-Air, a retrospective of television and radio interviews with Mayor Harold Washington compiled by the Museum of Broadcast Communications. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of Harold Washington’s election as Chicago’s first black mayor. The mayoral debates of 1983 transformed a relatively unknown congressman into a political phenomenon.

The museum has collected an impressive collection of Harold Washington’s television and radio appearances that helped change the face of political leadership in Chicago. The series will include in person campaign related appearances, town hall meetings, campaign commercials and coverage of his death in November of 1987.
Harold Washington: On-The-Air will be on display at the Museum from January 25 – February 28 and is free to the public. The museum will host a special seminar on February 7 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. moderated by Bruce DuMont, president of the museum. Seminar speakers include: Political activist and historian Timuel Black, former Washington advisors Tom Coffey and Jacky Grimshaw, former mayoral press secretary Alton Miller, former alderman turned WVON talk show host Clifford Kelley, veteran reporters Dick Kay (WCPT Radio) and Bill Cameron (WLS Radio) as well as other special guests will participate.
