Rape jokes about Bill Cosby apparently don’t sit well with the public.
Hannibal Buress can confirm this since he ended up addressing the backlash he received for making light of sexual assault allegations thrown at the comedy legend on “The Howard Stern Show.”
“It was unexpected,” Buress said about the attention he received this week from the controversy. “It wasn’t my intention to make it part of a big discussion. It was just something I was doing at that venue, right there.”
Buress’ comments come amid accusations Cosby has faced regarding the rape of at least 13 women. According to reports, the sexual assaults go as far back as the 1970s. As it stands, Cosby has never responded to the charges nor has he been charged with any wrongdoing.
Buress’ jokes about Cosby were recorded during a set in Philadelphia. The backlash marks the first time in his 13-year comedy career that his jokes have resulted in major controversy Buress said. To hear him tell it, he’s been performing the bit about Cosby “off and on for six months” before it went viral.
“It’s just information that’s out there,” Buress said. “”I said it and I gotta stand on it, but it is an interesting situation.”
