Halle Berry is hoping another Black entertainer will take home the Oscars’ Best Actress award this year.
During a recent appearance on Trevor Noah’s “What Now?” podcast, Berry, who made history as the first Black star to win an Oscar for Best Actress over 20 years ago, revealed that she’s “tired” of being the only Black actress to have won the award.
“I hope this year someone stands next to me,” Berry said. “This year, I hope it happens because I’m tired of occupying that space alone.”
Berry’s wish could come true as Wicked star Cynthia Erivo is nominated for Best Actress at this year’s Academy Awards. Other nominees in the category include Mikey Madison, Demi Moore, Fernanda Torres, and Karla Sofía Gascón.
Berry reflected on her own historic win, saying she knew winning Best Actress was “bigger than me.”
“I was, in that moment, [destined] to be a beacon of possibility. And I do think it served that purpose,” the actress said.
Berry noted that the feat didn’t come easy.
“Being born a Black woman, I feel like I have always felt like I sat at the bottom of society,” Berry said on Noah’s podcast.
“White man, Black man, white woman, Black woman,” she continued. “So I’ve always felt at the bottom, never feeling like I was defeated because I was at the bottom, never feeling like I couldn’t dream big because I was at the bottom, never feeling like I wasn’t worthy or capable because I was at the bottom. But I always have known that I’m going to have to work 10 times harder than everybody else to get anywhere.”
