That’s the word that Hales Franciscan High School junior Andre Anthony nailed in the all-boys school’s spelling bee Monday. The football halfback, basketball point guard, and track and field sprinter and long jumper knew he had the spelling win after the other contestant misspelled a word.

“When I heard him spell the ‘I’ in “memento” I knew I had it and then I spelled ‘mercenary,’” the honor roll jock with a 3.7 GPA said after winning the spelling bee. “It’s like football, gotta take it slow. You can go fast and get lucky, but it’s a chance.”

Anthony, who was runner up last year, was on a mission to capture the title of best speller in the school.

“I’ve been studying every day. I was at basketball, studying in between. Studying hard, I went out once with my girlfriend and that’s it. Nothing but study, study, study.
