U.S. Reps. Bobby Rush, D-1st, Jesse Jackson Jr., D-2nd, and Danny Davis, D-7th, asked Gov. Pat Quinn to endorse a public-private partnership for the construction of a third airport in the Chicagoland area. The Abraham Lincoln National Airport Commission presented its $400 million project plan and proposed the partnership to the congressmen. The airport project will be privately financed, but operated by local elected officials. It would reportedly create 1,000 construction jobs over a two-year period. The completed airport is expected to create up to 15,000 permanent jobs opening day and an additional 20,000 during the next generation, according to a letter the congressmen sent to the governor. “We view the airport as a second ‘stimulus package’ for Illinois. There is no higher priority in our community’s perspective than jobs. And no jobs program is larger than this,” the letter read in part. Copyright 2010 Chicago Defender
