SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn proposed an additional $1 billion in state budget cuts Tuesday.
The cuts include:
-$185 million by requiring each state employee to take 12 unpaid furlough days and laying off 1,600 workers outside of the Corrections Department.
-$125 million by laying off 1,000 Corrections employees and "downsizing" some prisons. The administration said it didn’t know yet whether that means closing any prisons.
-$250 million in grants to social service agencies funded by the departments of Human Services, Children and Family Services, Public Health and others.
-$175 million in education funding by maintaining current-year spending limits but preserving all money coming from the federal economic stimulus program.
