Former White House aide Gabe Amo (D) has made history in Rhode Island.

On Tuesday (November 7), Amo defeated Republican challenger Gerry Leonard, winning Rhode Island’s first congressional district seat, per the Guardian.

Amo, the son of Ghanaian and Liberian immigrants, is the state’s first Black candidate to be elected to Congress. Amo said his political career has been inspired by the drive of his parents.

“Just because my parents were born in two different West African countries, [it] doesn’t mean it doesn’t fit that narrative of how Rhode Island has been a haven for so many people from so many different places to thrive and build their families,” Amo previously said.

The former White House aide previously served in the Obama and Biden administrations, most recently working as the deputy director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.

As a congressman, Amo said he would fight against GOP attempts to cut funding for Social Security and Medicare. Amo also pledged to work to legalize abortion rights nationwide and fight for more legislation to combat the climate crisis.
