Free nutritional meals are available through Sept. 4 for city residents age 18 and under. The City of Chicago’s Summer Nutritional Program provides nutritious breakfast, lunch, dinners and snacks for youths at more than 200 locations around the city and is aimed at supplementing the free or reduced-price meals students receive during the school year. “The economic downturn has placed a financial strain on Chicago’s families making it difficult for many to fulfill the basic needs of their children. Assistive programs like the Summer Nutrition Program offer families support and provide a resource to ensure Chicago’s children do not go hungry this summer,” said Mary Ellen Caron, commissioner of the city’s Family and Support Service department. ______ AP Photo/Larry Crowe
