A man was critically wounded by gunfire Thursday evening in the Woodlawn neighborhood in the 6200 block of South Eberhart Avenue, police said. Chicago Police officers heard shots fired shortly before 7:30 p.m. and proceeded in the direction of the sound, near the corner of 62nd and Eberhart. They then saw a green Dodge Intrepid leaving the scene at a rapid pace, said Chicago Police News Affairs officer Michael Fitzpatrick. The vehicle fled about three blocks east and crashed in the 6200 block of South Evans Avenue. Police were able to catch one of the occupants who fled the vehicle, and also recovered a gun at the scene that may be connected to the shooting, police said. Charges are pending. A day earlier in the Bronzeville community, three men standing on a porch in the 4300 block of South Prairie Avenue were shot at about 5:45 p.m. when a man in a maroon car approached the home and opened fire, Fitzpatrick said. Sylvester Martin, 50, died less than an hour later at Stroger Hospital. A 53-year-old man was taken in fair condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and a 47-year-old man was taken in critical condition to Mt. Sinai Hospital, police said. It is unclear if either of the men were the intended target. No arrests have been made. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender. All rights reserved.
