A former state lawmaker who works as chief of staff to Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias (jeh-NOO’-lee-ehs) wants her boss’ job. Robin Kelly formally kicked off her campaign to be the state’s banker on Monday. The 52-year-old gave up her seat in the Illinois House to work as Giannoulias’ chief of staff when he took office in January 2007. The suburban Chicago Democrat is counting on her experience in state government to help her stand out in the race. Other treasurer candidates include Democrat Kip Kirkpatrick and Republican state Sen. Dan Rutherford (ROOTH’-er-furd). The treasurer’s job is open in the 2010 election because Giannoulias opted not to seek re-election to run for the U.S. Senate. Giannoulias wants the seat President Barack Obama once had that Sen. Roland Burris now holds. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
