Starting today, more than 600,000 families who receive food stamps will see increases of up to 13.6 percent for the next five years, thanks to $890 million in federal economic stimulus funds, Gov. Pat Quinn announced Tuesday. Illinois also received $11.5 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the Emergency Food Assistance Program to provide more food for food banks throughout the state. And the governor added $1 million from the state’s budget. Quinn said 3.5 million pounds of food has already been ordered for the banks. “During the national recession, Illinois families are struggling to put food on the table. Increased food benefits and additional funding for food banks will help parents keep their families fed and will help grow our Illinois economy,” the governor said.
