First lady Michelle Obama’s cousin has been named director of security for Chicago Public Schools.

First lady Michelle Obama’s cousin has been named director of security for Chicago Public Schools. CPS chief executive Ron Huberman says Michael Shields brings critical law enforcement skills to the district. Shields is a 21-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department. A top task will be to stem the growing number of student deaths. At least 38 CPS students have been killed in violence so far this school year. Huberman replaced Arne Duncan, whom President Barack Obama chose for his Education Secretary. Andres Durbak, CPS director of security under Duncan, resigned last week. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
